Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect at the consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. I will be asking some general questions to get a sense of what has been going on, what you are looking for in a counselor. I’ll share some insights on what are work together might look like. You will have an opportunity to ask me as many questions as you’d like to make sure we’re a good fit.

What to expect at my first session?

Don’t worry, I will always guide the conversation with thorough and thought-provoking questions. If you’re starting with individual work, I’ll want to get some background history and start building some goals and create a plan for work to be done between sessions. If you’re starting with couples counseling, I’ll be walking you and your partner through “the story of us” to get a sense of what your relationship has been like since the beginning, how you talk to one another and about each other. The first session will be like a semi-structured interview as I begin to develop the treatment plan.

My partner wants a divorce and I don’t. Is investing in couples counseling worth it?

Yes! The Gottman Method approach starts with a thorough assessment process that can help even some of the most disengaged partners some buy in.

Do you accept insurance?

I am not paneled with any insurance company. I will provide you with a Superbill to submit for potential reimbursement. Please contact your insurance company to better understand your out-of-network provider coverages.

Are you LGBTQ friendly?

Do you provide faith-based counseling?

Yes! A person/couples expression of faith can be integral to the process of counseling. We will discuss your faith background and your comfort level with including it in our work together

How do I book my first appointment?

During our consultation or after via email or phone I we will review our schedules and pick a great time for our first session. I’ll set you and your partner up with individual client portals to electronically sign documents through my Electronic Medical Record keeping system. Takes all of 5 minutes to get prepared prior to session. On that system you will be able to make changes to your payment information, get insurance forms, and keep track of appointments.

What to look for in a couples counselor?

Not all counselors are alike. Research proves that the most essential tool for success in counseling is how connected you feel to your counselor. I want you to feel safe and comfortable. There are differences among licenses when it comes to training and background. When you are seeking couples counseling, its important to talk with a counselor who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Also, make sure they have received post-graduate training in a specific couples counseling modality, what it is, and does it fit with what you’re trying to accomplish. These are great questions to ask in a consultation or when calling to schedule an appointment. Do your research! I’m usually the 3rd or 4th counselor couples see and when you’re in pain, you don’t want to be jumping around to different therapists.

What if my partner and I live in different states. Can you still meet with us?

Yes. I have been working with couples around the world who live in separate locations since 2018.

How many marathon sessions are needed?

During our consultation I will assess the state of your relationship and what marathon session option may be the best for you and why.

Are you kink and poly knowledgable?
