The consultation is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. I’ll ask some general questions to get a sense of what’s been going on and what you’re looking for in a counselor. I’ll share some insights into what our work might look like together. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to ask me as many questions as you’d like to make sure we’re a good fit.
-
First, don’t worry! I’ll always guide the conversation with thorough and thought-provoking questions. If you’re starting with individual work, I’ll want to get some background history and start building goals and a plan for work to be done between sessions. If you’re starting with couples counseling, I’ll walk you and your partner through “the story of us” to get a sense of what your relationship has been like since the beginning, how you talk to one another and about each other. The first session is like a semi-structured interview as I begin to develop the treatment plan.
-
During our consultation (or after, via email/phone) we’ll review our schedules and pick an ideal time for our first session. I’ll set you and your partner up with individual client portals to electronically sign documents (takes less than 5 minutes to do!). On that system, you’ll be able to make changes to your payment information, get insurance forms and keep track of appointments.

Not all counselors are alike! Research proves that the most essential tool for success in counseling is how connected you feel to your counselor. I want you to feel safe and comfortable. There are differences among licenses when it comes to training and background. When you’re seeking couples counseling, it’s important with a counselor who is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). Also, make sure they’ve receive post-graduate training in a specific couples counseling modality, what it is and ask yourself if it fits with what you’re trying to accomplish. These are great questions to ask in a consultation or when calling to schedule an appointment! Do you research — I’m often the 3rd or 4th counselor couples see and when you’re in pain, you don’t want to be jumping around to different therapists!
