Communication Patterns and Misunderstandings

Communication issues are a major factor in relationships with high conflict. It can be difficult to have constructive talks when negative communication patterns, such as criticism, denial, contempt, and stonewalling, become ingrained.

In partnerships with a lot of tension, misunderstandings are also frequent. Each partner may have a negative interpretation of the other's words and deeds, assuming malice or placing blame. This intensifies confrontations and starts a cycle of misinformation.

Couples can escape toxic cycles and improve their communication skills by becoming aware of their communication patterns and discovering healthier methods to express themselves.
